Jay is a Eurasian Jay who only appears in Farthing Wood: The Adventure Begins as a minor character in the book.
Farthing Wood: The Adventure Begins[]
Jay first appears in the book when Smooth Otter comes crashing into a tree that he was perching on. Jay tells the otter off before flying off at one of Smooth Otter's comments about how he should be acting, instead of acting like the other animals in the Wood.
He is the first to spot the humans observing Smooth Otter's carcass after the foxes' attack on the otters. He shouts "Slaughter!" but is ignored by the humans, who just hear his shouting as any human would hear him: chirping and squawking.
At the Farthing Wood Assembly, Jay complains about all the arguing going on when they should be coming up with solutions about the humans in the Wood. He also announces that Stout Fox is coming through the Wood.
He is the first of all the animals to spot the humans digging up the the field outside of Farthing Wood before flying off.
