New Friends, Old Enemies is the seventh episode of the first series of The Animals of Farthing Wood. It was originally broadcast in the UK on 17 February 1993.

As morning arrives Vole tells the fieldmice that he has found them all a home and suggests that they stay behind instead of going to White Deer Park. Vole and Fieldmouse inform Badger of their decision and, after consulting with Owl, Badger reluctantly agrees to go on without them. Meanwhile the baby fieldmice are getting restless and Adder tries to send them to sleep by hypnotizing them, but she sends herself to sleep instead. Squirrel gets Weasel to sing a song to wake Adder up and all the animals except the voles and fieldmice continue their journey.

Shortly, the other animals see a shrike carrying a baby fieldmouse in its beak and Hare returns to investigate. On the way back to the voles and fieldmice, he discovers, in a rather disturbing and grisly scene, that all the babies have been killed and brutally impaled on thorns by the shrike. Vole asks Badger if the voles and fieldmice can go on with the rest of the animals after all, and Badger agrees, then all the animals set off once more.

Meanwhile Fox has arrived in a town in a small boat and has been spotted by humans, so he makes a run for it and takes refuge in an alleyway. There, he meets a cat named Tom and agrees to hunt for rats for him in return for shelter and food. After hunting, Fox rests in a box which is loaded onto a truck and taken through the countryside where he escapes. He meets a friendly horse and rests in the shade for a while before moving off after discovering he is in hunting country. Fox discovers an empty earth and rests inside. Soon a female fox called Vixen returns and allows Fox to stay in her earth for a while. The two foxes then go hunting together.

  • This episode marks the first appearance of Vixen and the shrike, the only appearance of Tom and the horse, and the death of the baby fieldmice.
  • On the "From Copse to Quarry" VHS, most of the scenes down the back alley are cut, apart from Fox's arrival when he hides behind the boxes and his leaving when he gets carried away on the lorry.
